Each June, one paragraph: what did the collection learn this year?

This was the year the archive found its spine. It began as a cabinet of survivors, books, instruments, and one Venetian map, and somewhere between that map of Taprobana and a signed account of diving its reefs, the collection understood its own subject: one island, seen across four centuries, and the instruments people built along the way. The first Ceylon photographs and documents are now arriving. The oldest object still dates from 1590; the questions have grown much older. Vayadhammā saṅkhārā: everything made is on its way to dust. This year the Meridian learned which dust it is responsible for.
